What can I do?
Most Australians recognise that violence against women is an issue. However, as a community we excuse or minimise the attitudes and behaviours in young people that can lead to violence. By doing this we are allowing those attitudes and behaviours to become a normal part of growing up. Without realising it, we are making gender inequality and disrespectful behaviour acceptable.
We all have an important role to play to ensure future generations know what disrespect really is and how it starts, and that children grow up in a culture that promotes respect.
To do this we need to start by recognising the problem, what our role is as an influencer and stop our excuses.
To stop the cycle of violence we then need to start leading by example, and start a conversation about respect.
